Exploring multiplication

What it does
Exploring multiplication uses the 10x10 multiplication grid to support an understanding of multiplication based on showing discs arranged in a rectangle. It is offered at three levels, labelled levels 0, 1 and 2.

How to use it
When
Exploring multiplication is first opened, a blank 10x10 hundred square grid is displayed. Set the level (0, 1 or 2) using the drop-down box on the left.

Level 0: click in any square (say, row 3, column 4) to see 12 red discs arranged in a 3x4 rectangle. At the bottom of the screen is displayed '3 x 4 = 12'.

Level 1: (one missing factor): a target calculation is displayed above the grid (say, 6x?=30 or ?x7=21). Depending on whether the missing factor (shown as '?')

Level 2: (two missing factors): a target calculation is displayed above the grid (say, ?x?=24). Click on an appropriate square in the grid to complete the calculation. At the bottom of the screen is shown the calculation corresponding to the current selection.
